This story taught me the importance of playing the long game. Eric Schubert is a teen genealogy prodigy, who often helps adopted people find their roots. We started talking to him in September 2018 about doing a possible profile. But we also needed a case to show the impact of his work on his clients’ lives. Over several months, I spoke with a dozen or so people, getting permission to track what is often a very personal process of discovering one’s biological family, and ultimately settled on case we could follow for television. The piece finally aired in June 2019. It was worth the wait. I produced and wrote this piece.
